Bachelor of
Arts in English Studies
This program is designed to assist students, for
whom English is not their first language, to develop their English
writing and research skills to a level expected of a Bachelor
Graduate.
Section I Modules 1 - 5
Compulsory Subjects
Year
One. Term One.
Module 1. Grammar, Syntax and Semantics
By the end of this module the student will have
demonstrated a firm grasp of the various aspects of the structure
and nature of English grammar and meaning. The module will also
cover the globalisation and varieties of English. Assessment will be
by means of five tasks and a short project.
Year
One. Term Two
Module
2. Academic Writing Skills Development
By the end of this module the student will have
developed the necessary skills and knowledge to have the ability to
produce an academically acceptable text at graduate level.
Assessment will be by means of a series of written tasks each of
varying length building up to an essay of no less than 1500 words.
Year One. Term Three
Module 3. Language Comparative Analysis
By the end of this module the student will have
gained an understanding of the grammar, phonology, stylistics and
register between British or American English and a non-English
language which may or may not be the L1 of the student. Assessment
will be by means of a submitted paper of no less than 5000 words.
Year Two Term Four
Module 4. Creative Writing
By the end of this module the student will be able
to recognise and produce a variety of writing styles. The skills and
knowledge developed throughout this module will relate directly to
the final theses in year three. This module is designed to
facilitate the acquisition of multi-faceted research skills as well
as honing literary insight and appreciation. Assessment will be by
means of a critiques and evaluations of set texts as well as the
production of original prose.
Year Two Term Five
Module 5. History of English Language
By
the end of this module the student will be able to demonstrate a
sound understanding of the evolution of the form and structure of
British English from the middle ages to the present day. Assessment
will be by means of one major and one minor project focussing upon
occurring changes at chosen points in history.

Women Writers
One
subject to be chosen from the above list. It is expected that 100
hours be devoted to research and investigation and a minimum of 50
hours to be dedicated to the production of an extended essay of
around 7000 words
Section III – These Units
are equivalent to twice the value of year I and II modules

With the subject being examined by the writing of
10,000 – 12,000 word thesis, which would comprise a set agreed
topic for the students to develop their research and thesis writing
skills around.
