HISTORY
Papantoniou Institute was
officially founded in 1999 and in the past years it has grown, not just in the
number of students, but also in the types of subjects available. It is based in
Nicosia and Larnaca, at the moment, there are two branches operating in
Aglandjia Nicosia, namely the University Entrance Department
and the Foreign Language Department. And a Foreign
Language Department and TEACHER TRAINING DEPT in Larnaca.
There are people of various
nationalities currently studying at the Institute. Apart from Cyprus, we also
have students from Greece, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand,
Russia, Holland, South Africa, Mexico, Bulgaria, Moldova, Lebanon, Bangladesh
and the Philippin
THE PRINCIPAL AND STAFF
Education has always been the life of
the Principal of the Institute, Stelios Papantoniou. After working for 30 years
in government schools, he retired early in 1999, as the Principal of the
Pancyprian Gymnasium, the first High School founded in Cyprus. This is when the
Papantoniou Institute was founded, teaching at first, lessons for University
Entrance Examinations and later adding foreign languages.
The staff at the Papantoniou Institute
are all highly qualified and experienced in their field. Moreover, a number of
the teachers teaching foreign languages are native speakers of that language.
A past students' experience
Kia
Ora from New Zealand
After
travelling from London to Cyprus to London, Japan, Sydney, where I took
a stopover to visit my son, I am back in New Zealand. London-magnificient as always, Japan-new and
exciting,Sydney-sunshine and surf, New Zealand-friends, family and
home.
Cyprus
is now thousands of miles away.
The memory, however, of Colin and Tina and their team at
the Papantoniou Institute in Nicosia, remains fresh and vivid,
especially the passion they have for their work.
My
time in Cyprus began after leaving a typical September London day
and arriving late evening in Larnaca.
Met by Colin and a chatty 30 minute drive later I booked
into my hotel in Nicosia.
Then
it was out for an evening tour of the old city and iced lattes.
Next morning I explored the quaint alleys and streets near
my hotel before embarking on my initiation to TESOL.
At 3o'clock Kiki, charming, bright and happy (everyone
could do with a Kiki in their lives) met me at the hotel and led
the way to the school.
My
first assignment was to observe Tina teaching a group of school
children. They were
delightfully entertaining, by far the most energetic and
distractable group of youngsters I have been with for a long time.
I am sure Colin's thinking was if I could cope with them
the rest of my time there would be a breeze.
I applaud Tina on the way she managed them.
I will not forgetthat first class.
The
days to follow were full of challenges, mistakes and successes,
learning and appreciation and so enjoyable.
Each morning I just wandered and discovered the joys of
Nicosia. The
afternoons were spent at the school, where I came into contact
with Sri Lankan, Egyptian, Russian, Chinese and Cypriot students,
all at varying levels of ability in speaking English.
How
quickly I became engaged in their desire to learn. How grateful I am for their acceptance of me to teach them
and for how much they taught me.
The
hotel, organised by Colin, was great. A friendlier, more
hospitable place to stay could not have been found.
I was accepted as if I had been there forever and was quite
at home.
Nicosia
unfolded its soul a little more each day.
The history, the food, the music and most of all the people
contributed to what was a most happy and memorable time.
I
visited Kykkos Monastry in the Troodos Mountains, managed the
Cyprus taxi's (great old mercedes), travelled to Kerynia in the
North, danced to the Bouzouki some late evenings, and met
beautiful, happy people. I would have stayed if I had not already booked my
flight to New Zealand.
My
Nicosia experience will stand me well as my journey into the world
of TESOl evolves.
To
Colin, Tina, Kiki, Tony, all the students, and everyone I met,
travelled with, spoke with, danced with I give my heartfelt
thanks. AROHANUI.
