The master of science in education with a specialization in teaching English as a foreign language focuses on training current and future educators in the areas of foreign language instruction assessment and evaluation and curriculum development. This specialization provides students with a foundation in second language learning theories and instructional technology and distance education. Through an articulation agreement with London Teacher Training College students can transfer up to 15 credits toward programme requirements. Additional elective courses for advanced studies in two concentration areas are also available. Course content is research based and infuses best practices in education.
Applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate English proficiency by providing proof of a minimum score of 550/213/80 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.
These courses are worth 3 credits each:
Transfer up to 15 credits from LTTC which has entered into an articulation agreement with NSU's Fischler School of Education and Human Services. These courses have been reviewed and approved by NSU faculty members. Students who transfer in less than 15 credits from LTTC must select other NSU TEFL courses to complete 36 credits.
The applied professional experience and the international applied professional experience are among the many practical applications included in the teaching English as a foreign language specialization. The capstone project is the final step in the completion of the programme. Conducted in an appropriate educational setting, either in the United States or abroad, students will conduct a bilingual or foreign language teaching experience, maintain reflective journals, and create files of samples of their students' work and the assessment instruments used to demonstrate achievement of professional and content standards. All applied professional experiences are accompanied by portfolios detailing the rationale, process, and evaluation of the project. Students who have completed an international TEFL certificate, like the LTTC Certificate in TEFL may use the certificate to fulfill the applied professional experience requirement. All other international TEFL certificates must be approved by the programme office.
LTTC participants may transfer up to three (3) LTTC courses equivalent to fifteen (12) graduate credits and the LTTC Certificate in TEFL (3 credits) towards completion of their NSU/FSEHS M.S. in Education Degree. LTTC participants must provide proof of completion of any courses-credits transferred into the M.S. in Education Degree and must meet NSU/FSEHS admission requirements as outlined in the NSU/FSEHS Catalog and Student Handbook.
LTTC participants must provide copies of the LTTC Certificate in TEFL and a transcript of the LTTC transferable courses prior to receiving the M.S. in Education with a specialization in TEFL.
In order to receive the special tuition rate, per this Agreement, LTTC participants must provide proof of completion of the LTTC courses or evidence that the courses are in progress. All courses must be completed and the copy of the LTTC Certificate in TEFL must be received by NSU/FSEHS, prior to receiving the M.S. in Education at NSU/FSEHS.
Participants entering the M.S. in Education program through LTTC and transferring LTTC courses for graduate credit are responsible for directly completing all registration requirements and paying $300 per graduate credit for the NSU/FSEHS courses (total of 21 credits or more) they take to complete the M.S. in Education with a specialization in TEFL.
This tuition rate is applicable ONLY to the M.S. in Education with a specialization in TEFL and outside of the United States. LTTC prospective students seeking admissions into NSU/FSEHS will be required to pay application, registration and any other student fees charged to university students.
